Sock exchange

I tend to have a problem of not finishing things that are ment for myself. I desided to go round this problem by participating in a group where I made socks to one person and got socks from another.

So I made these:

And got these in return:

Much can be said about the exchange but let me tell you one thing: these socks have character.

The Kalevala Epic could not exist without a man called Lönnrot, so what would a Kalevala blanket be without the Lönnrot square :). Lönnrot compiled the Kalevala. He collected material from rune singers and others on his numerous poetry trips, and collected and edited the material for the epic of the Finnish people, known as the Kalevala. This square respects his great work, the spiral in the middle tells us about those travels of Lönnrot, around the sides there are L-letters as the signature of Lönnrot to this blanket.

About the CALThis crochet square pattern is a part of a Finnish crochet project. We have designed a crochet blanket based on the Kalevala Mythology. It has been created as a tribute Finland’s 100 years of independence. The general information and links to all the square patterns of the blanket can be found in the Kalevala CAL info post at the blog of Arteeni.

Colours

You can crochet this piece with 1-3 colours. By crocheting with one colour (monochrome) use two yarn threads on the spiral. By using more colours, the bottom colour is A (in instructions photo it is dark grey). The L letters can be done with the other colour of the spiral (colour B, orange in instructions) or its own colour (colour C, olive green in instructions).

Kalevala CAL colours, Menita Lasse yarn:

  • Colour A = Dark grey 203
  • Colour B = Orange 3309
  • Colour C = Olive green 9963

Spiral

At first you crochet a spiral in the middle of the piece. Here are a couple of notes to crochet a spiral: Always crochet only into the back loops of the stitches of the previous round. After the first round: in one round crochet with one colour into all the stitches of different colour of the previous round. When changing colour continue from where you stopped last time with that colour.

Round 1: Magic ring with colour B: ch1, sc, hdc, 7dc. Drop this yarn behind your work for later. Crochet into the same ring with colour A: ch1, sc. Drop yarn behind for later. Tighten the ring. (12 sts)

Photo1: At the beginning crochet both colours into the same magic ring.

Round 2: With colour A into back loops of every colour B sts (including ch): 2sc into same st. Drop yarn behind for later. (20 sts)

Photo 2: In round one crochet, with each colour in turn, into all different colour stitches of the previous round and drop yarn behind your work for later.

Round 3: Colour B. 2dc into same st, 2dc into next st, *2dc into same st, dc into next st*, repeat *-* until the end of round (notice again ch in the beginning). Drop yarn behind for later. (34 sts)

Round 4: Colour A. *3sc, 2sc into same st*, repeat *-* until the end of round (omitting these last sts: sc, 2sc in same st). Drop yarn behind for later. (42 sts)

Round 5: Colour B. 2dc, *2dc into same st, 3dc*, repeat *-* until the end of round. Drop yarn behind for later. (52 sts)

Round 6: Colour A. *2sc into same st, 4sc*, repeat*-* until the end of round (omitting these last stitches:  3 sc. With colour B make 2hdc, sc, sl st and colour A make 3hdc, dc, dc and hdc into same st, sc, 4 sl st. Yarn colour B can now be cut. (64 sts in total).

Circle to square (crochet with colour A)

Round 7: Colour A. *Sl st, sc, ch2, sk 1 st, hdc, ch2, sk 1 st, dc, ch2, sk 1 st, tr, ch5, tr, ch2, sk 1 st, dc, ch2, sk 1 st, hdc, ch2, sk 1 st, sc, sl st*, repeat *-* 4 times in total.

Round 8: Colour A. Ch1, *sc (into sl st of the previous round), sc (into sc of previous round), 2sc into ch-sp, 2sc into next ch-sp, 2sc into next ch-sp, (2sc, ch3,  2sc) into the ch-sp in the corner, 2sc into ch-sp, 2sc into next ch-sp, 2sc into next ch-sp, sc (into sc of previous round), sc (into sl st  of the previous round)*, repeat *-* 4 times in total. Join with a sl st to sc at the beginning of round.

The L letters and the border

Finally crochet two L letters to frame the square. You can use either colour B or colour C. Colours are changed several times during each round. You can consider to keeping one colour running along inside the stitches while you crochet with the other colour, but perhaps the neatest result may be to cut the yarn with every colour change. When changing colours make the last pull-through with the new colour (meaning when making a double crochet, change the yarn when you have two loops on hook;  when making a chain st change the colour when making the chain).

Round 9: Colour A: Sl st in next 4 sts, ch3, dc in next 6 sts (last one into ch-sp in the corner). Colour C: Ch3, dc into same ch-sp as the previous one. *ch1, sk1 st, dc*, repeat *-* 10 times in total. (Dc, ch3, dc) into the ch-sp in the corner. Dc, *ch1, sk1 st, dc*, repeat *-* 6 times in total, ch1, sk1 st. Colour A: Dc in next 7 sts (last one into ch-sp in the corner). Colour C: Ch3, dc into same ch-sp as the previous one. *ch1, sk1 st, dc*, repeat *-* 10 times in total. (Dc, ch3, dc) into the ch-sp in the corner.
